If you’re prompting your way to disappointing content, you’re probably missing a big, important thing. AI brand voice training.
A lot of our clients are frustrated when they use AI because it sounds like AI. Fair enough, right? The thing is, using AI comes down to good input. Good input = good output. So if you want your AI content to sound like your brand, you need to know your brand voice and train your AI tool accordingly.
Not sure if you’re dealing with this? Read on and if these sound like your challenges, it’s time for some AI voice training.
If you’re editing out the same AI tells every single time, semicolons where you’d never use one, em dashes stacked in every paragraph, the word “seamless” showing up again, that’s not bad luck. That’s AI defaulting to its favorite patterns because nothing told it not to.
A trained voice document names your specific pet peeves once. Then you stop having the same fight every week.
Read a draft without your logo on it. Could it be your brand? Could it be literally any brand in your category? If nothing in the copy is distinctly, unmistakably yours, the AI has no idea what actually makes you different. It’s writing the average of everything it’s ever read, because that’s exactly what it’s been asked to do.
Fast first drafts are supposed to be the entire point. If you’re spending as much time rewriting AI output as you would have spent writing from scratch, the tool isn’t saving you anything. It’s just moving the work from writing to editing.
“Friendly and confident.” “Bold but approachable.” Every brand describes itself this way, which means it tells AI almost nothing. Adjectives are a vibe. AI needs patterns: sentence length, where you use contractions, what you find funny, what you take seriously, real examples of your best writing next to real examples of what you’d never publish.
If it’s not just AI struggling, if new hires and freelancers also can’t quite land your voice without months of feedback, that’s a real signal. It usually means the voice was never actually documented anywhere. It’s living in your head, which means it’s not transferable, to a person or to a prompt.
None of these are AI problems. They’re all the same problem: nobody’s told the AI, specifically enough, what your brand actually sounds like. A style guide covers your visuals. AI voice training covers everything else, the rhythm, the word choices, the real examples, the prompt frameworks that make every draft after it sound like you instead of sounding like everyone.
